Abstract

Culture shock is a natural thing which is happened to a settled foreigner. Culture shock is caused by the missing of the signs or the symbols that exist in the culture which the people believe. It can happen if the people choose to leave their region and go to the new region with different culture like habit, norm, and the people tradition, so the previous culture in the previous region could have not applied to the new region. That phenomenon is happened to college student from Papua. In that case, they feel excessive anxiety, frustrate with the situation, and scare to begin the interaction on communication with new people because the differences of the culture between Papua and Yogyakarta. The aim of this research is to know the cause of what the reason of culture shock can happen. The method which is used in this research is qualitative descriptive approach, collect the data by interview with four college students from Papua in Yogyakarta City with the criteria is college student of early semester and last semester, theory that used in this research is intercultural communication and culture shock. The result of this research is showed that there are four main factors which are caused culture shock, like weather, food, language, and character. By the problem, the informant has some solutions to solve it. The conclution of this research is over time culture shock can have minimalized by be more patient and Papua college students can be success in solving or minimalizing culture shock, they can pass the aspect like friendship, culture understanding, emotion, and time.
