Abstract
Quenching is a metal hardening process by refrigeration accelerate from the austenizing temperature. This study aims to increase the hardness, tensile strength and to determine the changes in the microstructure of the tool knife and to determine the chemical composition contained in the tool knife. In this quenching process, the medium used is teak charcoal liquid. The material used is medium carbon steel (S35C). Furthermore, the specimens were subjected to hardness testing, tensile testing, microstructure photos and chemical composition tests. The chemical composition test results showed that the carbon value (C) of the quenching material and raw material was categorized in the medium carbon steel group with carbon (C = 0.363% and 0.374%). The tensile test results show that the quenching material has more brittle properties than the raw material. From the hardness test results, the average hardness value of quenching material is 402 VHN on the surface of 385 VHN on the sides and 324 VHN and 195 VHN raw material. The resulting micro-phase photos are ferrite and pearlite.
