Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the students error in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) Mathematics problems on comparative material. This research was a qualitative descriptive study involving 35 students of VII B class at Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura Junior High School. The data collection techniques through observation, tests and interviews, while data analysis by data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate HOTS students based on student’s errors in solving problems based on the Newman procedure, namely: 1) reading 56.19%, 2) coomprehension 62.86%, 3) transformation 77.14%, 4) process skill 71, 43%, and encoding 95.24%. Students with high and medium criteria have been able to solve HOTS questions with an analytical perspective. However, they still made mistakes in encoding and process skill procedures when working on HOTS questions with an evaluate and create perspective. Meanwhile, students with low criteria have not been able to solve HOTS questions with the analyze, evaluate, or create perspective. They made mistakes in the transformation, process skill, and ecoding procedure on HOTS questions with an analyze perspective. Meanwhile, when working on HOTS questions with an evaluate and create perspective, they tend to make all kinds of errors in Newman's error analysis.
