Abstract

The background of this research is the lack of awareness in carrying out literacy activities. The objectives of this study were to: (1) describe the implementation of the summarizing method using mind mapping, (2) describe the use of mind mapping with the summarizing method, (3) describe the obstacles in building a literacy culture, (4) describe solutions in building a literacy culture. This research uses qualitative research, data collection techniques by interview, observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique used qualitative data analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data used triangulation of sources and techniques, the research source of the principal, homeroom teacher of class 4a, and grade 4a students. The data obtained are in the form of interviews with observations and documentation of the implementation of the summarizing method with mind mapping, the results of the study show that: (1) to build a literacy culture in MIN 6 Boyolali, starting with implementing reading corners in every classroom, this activity is not mandatory. This is an appeal, and the strategy used by class 4a homeroom teacher is to use the summarizing method with mind mapping. (2) the use of mind mapping with the summarizing method is carried out every time one to six lessons are completed, starting with the students re-reading the material that has been previously studied, then making a mind mapping according to the teacher's direction. (3) the obstacles experienced are the lack of encouragement given to students, the lack of quantity and quality of books available, and space for comfortable reading activities. (4) the solution that has been done is that the principal makes a special room for reading, empowering community participation in the procurement of books, and teachers who motivate students every morning.
