Abstract

The purpose of this study is (1) identifying the direct and indirect sentences in national newspaper articles, (2) identifying the functions of direct and indirect sentences informing facts and opinions, (3) interpreting research results by learning direct and indirect sentences in grade XII High School students. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data of the research are taken from the national newspaper articles include Solopos, Kompas, Kedaulatan Rakyat, Jawa Pos, and Suara Merdeka, October-November-December 2019 editions. The data sources are the five newspapers. The theoretical triangulation uses to validate the data. This research uses the Agih method to analyze the data. The results of the research are: first, there are direct and indirect sentences, in general, they have four main patterns in compiling facts and opinions in reading. Second, there is an indirect sentence function in the discourse of national newspapers. The three results of these findings are related to the learning process of direct and indirect sentences, especially in grade XII High School students to facilitate the interpretation of facts and opinions in direct and indirect sentences.
