Abstract
Quenching is a metal working process by cooling rapidly from the austenizing temperature (generally at a temperature range of 815oC - 870oC). So that through quenching will prevent any processes that can occur in slow cooling such as grain growth. In general, quenching will cause a decrease in grain size and aims to increase the hardness value of a metal alloy. The process quenching is carried out with salt liquid. Salt is used as a cooling agent because it has fast and regular cooling properties, which will result in a harder bond because it will bind the charcoal on the surface of the workpiece. Salt solution is a solution of salt and water, the boiling point of the solution will be higher than that of pure solvent. The advantage of using salt water as a cooling medium is that the temperature is evenly cooled. The chemical composition test results show the carbon value (C) of the quenching material and raw material is categorized in the low carbon steel group. The tensile test results show that the quenching material has more brittle properties than the raw material. From the hardness test results, the average hardness value of quenching material is 207.6 VHN on the surface of 186.6 VHN on the sides and raw 199 VHN and 113.3 VHNmaterial.
