Abstract

Many studies indicate if crisis communication in Asian perspectives is increasingly required in the domination of Western perspective. This is also caused by the lack of discussion of cultural issues in crisis communication studies. This research aims to explore communication performed by the Royal Palace of Surakarta and its stakeholders when a crisis occurs in it. Furthermore, this study also aims to explain the role of culture in crisis communication. This study uses a qualitative method with an interpretive case study approach. This study uses a single case study, which focuses on a single case, which is crisis in the Royal Palace of Surakarta Hadiningrat. The data is taken with in-depth interviews, participant observation and supported by the journals, reference books, and internet sites. The informants have selected by using purposive and snowball sampling. In accordance with the needs of the data, it finally collects 13 informants from the internal family of the Royal Palace of Surakarta Hadiningrat, courtiers, and media journalists. The data is then analyzed by using pattern matching. In this study, crisis is caused by ongoing conflicts that are not able to be completed and trigger the emergence of new conflicts. Communication that occurs during the crisis has not been able to respond positively to crisis. The results also show if there are different types of crisis communication that are performed between the conflicting parties and the stakeholders. The other finding is that indigenous culture has not been used for the implementation of crisis communication. Indigenous culture sometimes becomes a barrier to communication. The presence of culturally based communication model illustrates how culture, crisis communication, sense making, social construction and the image becomes interrelated part in forming crisis communication.
