Abstract

The principals' interpersonal communication refers to a locally culture-based value. The three sites were located in Klaten regency. They take a Javanese culture because they are between the palaces: Kasunanan Surakarta Palace and Kasultanan Yogjakarta palace. Therefore, the study observed a Javanese cultural values-based interpersonal ommunication. The study aims to describe and fmd the four substantial theories of: 1) interpersonal communication process, 2) interpersonal communication skill, 3) interpersonal communication medium, and 4) source of principals' interpersonal communication value based on Javanese culture. Based on the characteristics of subject and research focus, the study used a qualitative and multi-sites approach. The data collection employed an in-depth interview, observation, and documentation. The data analysis applied a single site and cross-sites. The data validation used a triangulation, member check and peer discussion technique and data were audited by the promoters. The results of the study can be stated as follows. 1) It could be concluded that a principals' interpersonal communication based on Javanese cultural value was that as a communicant as well as communicator, the principals referred to Javanese cultural values. In other words, it seems that they communicated with full Javanese cultural values. 2) The principals' communication could use Javanese cultural values fluently so that they could be useful for a) developing a relationship, b) overcoming a personal problem of information, c) solving an interpersonal communication problem, d) solving an organizational problem, e) overcoming a problem of language and understanding, f) solving any conflict, g) increasing a subordinate communication, h) coordinating and holding any meeting well, building a solid team, j) promoting innovation, k) motivating subordinates, and 1) making any negotiation well. 3) In terms of the interpersonal communication media, the principals could use the communication media such as hand phone/telephone, banner, email, correspondences, and value sources. 4) Regarding the value sources, the principals used Javanese cultural values in interpersonal communication. The sources included Javanese expressions, past poets' works, and tales of puppet shows. It is recommended that I) in the interpersonal communication with subordinates, peer, students, community society, and stakeholders e principals refer to Javanese cultural values so that they can be meaningful for developing interpersonal communication effectiveness. 2) The Education Agency should suggest all of the principals and their educative staff and educative administration staff to use an interpersonal communication based on Javanese cultural values so that they can implant values, attitudes, ethics, and moralities reflecting a cultural nation. 3) The other research in the future can examine different subjects so that they can enrich other results of study.
