Abstract
Background: Riskesdas data for 2018 stated that 92.6% of the age group of five to nine years had dental caries. Their knowledge and attitude can influence the way they prevent dental caries. The health belief model has been widely used in research and has the main concept of prediction of actions to prevent, select or control disease conditions. The role of parents in the prevention of dental caries is very necessary because at the age of 8-9 years the child's ability to make decisions is still not well developed so it requires guidance. Objective: This study aims to determine the description of dental caries prevention behavior of children aged 8-9 years based on parents' perceptions using the health belief model theory (susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, self-efficacy and cues to action). Method: This research is a descriptive study using quantitative observational type with cross sectional design. The subjects in this study were parents of children aged 8 - 9 years at SD Negeri 44 Nusukan with 52 respondents. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling technique. Data analysis in this study used univariate analysis to see the frequency distribution of each variable studied. Results: This study used a questionnaire with 15 statements that had been tested for validity. Analysis of the data in the normality test shows that all variables have normally distributed data so categorization uses the mean, except the categorization benefit variable uses the median. Conclusion: There are 32.69% of respondents having a perceived susceptibility, 42.31% of respondents have a perceived severity, 65.38% of respondents perceive that dental caries prevention behavior is beneficial, 69.23% of respondents have no perception of barriers, 32.69% of respondents have the perception conduct behaviors that can prevent dental caries in children and 78.85% of respondents encourage children to do dental caries prevention behavior.
