Abstract

Writing skills as one of the productive language skills. An article is derived from a basic sentence that has not changed and is a forerunner of sentences that can be in the form of single sentences or compound sentences. Then from the basic sentence experience a change by adding, subtracting, replacing, shortening, reversing, embedding, or merging. This change is called transformation. The purpose of this study, namely (1) Describing the types of transformation sentences contained in news texts written by students of class VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta and (2) describing the complexity of sentences, tightness, and focus on news texts written by students of class VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. This research uses the method of sharing with marking and changing techniques, the method used in collecting data is library technique, listening and note taking. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII B of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. The object of his research was the transformation sentence in the news text written by students of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. The results of this study indicate that (1) the types of transformation sentences contained in students' essays include 48 single transformation sentences, 8 embedded transformation sentences, 21 tight transformation sentences, and 13 focus transformation sentences. (2) the complexity of sentences contained in student essays includes 19 sentences consisting of 1 type of transformation, 10 sentences consisting of 2 types of transformation, and 1 sentence consisting of 3 transformations. The conclusion of this study, students of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta in class VIII B in constructing transformation sentences mostly use single transformation sentences.
