Abstract

This research presents analysis of human nature in Paulo Coelho’s novel, The Devil and Miss Prym. The Devil and Miss Prym tells about Chantal, the main character, who is motivated to save Viscos, her birthplace. There are three problems to be analyzed in this research. They are: (1) the human nature in the protagonist and antagonist of The Devil and Miss Prym novel (2000), (2) the description of human nature in the protagonist and antagonist of The Devil and Miss Prym novel (2000), and (3) the reasons of Paulo Coelho use the elements of the human nature in the protagonist and antagonist in The Devil and Miss Prym novel (2000). The type of this research is qualitative research employing descriptive method. This research is attempted to analyze the The Devil and Miss Prym novel by Paolo Coelho that was written in 2000 by using a psychoanalytic perspective. In this research, the source of data is The Devil and Miss Prym novel by Paolo Coelho that was written in 2000. Hence, the dialogue by the main characters in the novel, the protagonist and antagonist are used as the data of this research. The researcher uses the qualitative data analysis in analyzing the data. The analysis is begin from the structural analysis of the work and finally the psychoanalytic approach. The results of the analysis reveal that first, the human nature inserted in the main characters of Coelho’s novel “The Devil and Miss Prym” are regression, the ego which related to the need for love, self-preservation, desire, and fear. Those are instilled in the main characters, particularly The Stranger or Carlos and Chantal Prym. Second, in “The Devil and Miss Prym”, the complexity of human nature is identified. By specifically analyzing the people of Viscos through their thoughts and actions, it is clearly evident that human nature is depicted as both Good and Evil. Third, Coelho inserted the human nature elements in the characters of his novel, particularly “The Devil and Miss Prym” is to give lesson to the reader through his characters about the right and wrong and the two side of human nature itself which is Good and Evil or Good and Bad.
