Abstract

Background: People with asthma experience shortness of breath which worsens with activity, wheezing and coughing due to narrowing of the airways. This results in changes in breathing patterns, decreased peak expiratory flow, decreased fitness, decreased physical activity abilities and loss of productivity that will reduce quality of life. But this can be prevented by regular physical activity in the form of asthma gymnastics. This study aims to analyze the effect of asthma exercises on increasing peak expiratory flow (APE) and improving quality of life in madupahat communities in Balkesmas, Semarang Region. Research methods: Quasi-experimental research with research design Pre and Post Test with Control Group Design was conducted at the Balkesmas Semarang Region in the middle of January 2020 - March 2020 with a sample of 26 people and with Total Sampling techniques. The tool used is a peak flow meter to measure expiratory peak flow and mini AQLQ to assess quality of life. Data analysis uses a statistical dependent sample t-test (Paired t-test) to determine differences in peak expiratory flow, while for quality of life using a statistical test Wilcoxon. Analysis of the difference in peak expiratory flow between the intervention group and the control group used the independent sample sampling test (Pooled t test), while for the analysis of differences in quality of life between the intervention group and the control group the Mann Whitney statistical test was used. Results: The results of data analysis of differences in the Peak Expiracy Flow (APE) in the intervention group obtained p value = 0.002 (p <0.05), while in the control group the value of p = 0.352 (p> 0.05) was obtained. The results of data analysis of differences in the quality of life of people with asthma in the intervention group obtained p = 0.014 (p <0.05), while the control group obtained p = 0.414 (p> 0.05). The results of the analysis of the difference in APE data and quality of life before and after treatment between the intervention and control groups, from the APE obtained p = 0.310 (p> 0.05), from the quality of life obtained p = 0.159 (p> 0.05). Conclusion: There is the effect of asthma gymnastics conducted 3 times a week for 8 weeks to increase the peak flow of expiration and improve the quality of life of people with asthma in the Madupahat community in Balkesmas Semarang Region.
