Abstract

This research studies about commissive utterances in English translation of Al Quran. The objectives of the study are to describe (1) the syntactic forms and (2) the speaker’s intention of commissive utterances, especially in surah An Nahl (The Bee). The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer uses observation and documentation method by selecting the commissive utterances which can be found in surah An Nahl (The Bee) and the steps are: determining the chapter, reading the chapter, sorting out sentences contain commissive utterance and coding the data. In analyzing the commissive utterances, the steps are: describing the syntactic form by applying the theory deals with sentence by types and determining the variety of the speaker’s intention by applying speech act theory, especially locutionary and illocutionary. The study shows that (1) there are three syntactic forms of commissive utterances, namely declarative with normal word order of subject and predicate, imperative and interrogative and (2) the speaker’s intentions of this study cover warning (46%), threatening (30%), promising (18%), and swearing (6%). By uttering the commissive utterances, Allah guides His servants to reach His heaven by doing the obligation as a Moslem and keep away from evil deeds.
