Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between social support and coping strategies, so the authors propose the hypothesis "There is a positive relationship between social support and coping strategies". Subjects in this study were nurses in Surakarta Mental Hospital totaling 198. The sampling technique was purposive non random sampling, that is, the subjects used as research samples were based on certain characteristics. Measuring instruments used to uncover research variables are 2 types of measuring tools, namely: (1) social support scale, and (2) coping strategy scale. Data analysis in this study uses product moment correlation. The empirical mean of social support variables was 98.24 with a hypothetical mean of 87.5. So the empirical mean> hypothetical mean which illustrates that in general nurses Surakarta Hospital has high social support. Furthermore, the empirical average coping strategy variable was 112.60 with a hypothetical mean of 97.5. So the empirical mean> hypothetical mean which means that in general the Surakarta Mental Hospital nurses have a high coping strategy. The role of social support for coping strategies (SE) of 32.9% means that there are still 67.1% that influence coping strategies for example: religiosity, self-activity, self-control, acceptance, and planning. Based on the results of the analysis, the correlation between social support and coping strategy (r) is obtained by 0.574 with p = 0.000 where p <0.01, this means that there is a very significant positive relationship between social support and coping strategies. This means that the higher the social support the higher the RSJ nurses 'coping strategies, and conversely the lower the social support, the lower the Surakarta RSJ nurses' coping strategies.
