Abstract
Living in a nursing home with a declining physical condition and far from the family makes the elderly feel excluded and lonely. In this condition happiness becomes very important for the elderly to be able to live their live more positively while also facilitating the elderly to enjoy their daily lives in nursing homes. This study aimed to describe happiness the elderly living in a nursing home. This research uses qualitative research with a case study approach. The main informants in this study are the elderly aged 60-74 years old, amount of 5 people, and supporting informants 3 people with details 2 people as a nurses, and 1 person as caretaker of nursing home. Results from this study showed that all informants are happy to stay at nursing home although the meaning of happiness of each subject is different one another. The meaning of happiness elderly includes gratitude, comfortable, calm, happy and satisfied. The sources of feeling happy and satisfied can be grouped into: (1) activity: the informant was given the freedom to conduct their activities, both for worship and for their personal use; (2) health: health insurance available for the elderly; (3) social relations: the freedom to mingle with fellow residents nursing home or associate with people who live around the nursing home; and (4) positive expectations: the elderly still have positive hopes for their future, for example, they want to live long, want to reunite family. The existence of this research will help the government and social institutions to be able to provide nursing homes that are better suited to their needs and social and help and improve the quality and facilities of existing nursing homes, considering that there are still many elderly who live neglected and need a decent place to live in order to live well in their old age.
