Abstract
The development of advanced technology at this time requires good quality materials, especially those made from metal. Mechanical properties of metal materials such as: hardness, strength, tenacity, and resistance to corrosion and wear which are always associated with compounds formed in the material. This encourages the need for research and development of technology, will change the composition and properties of metal microstructure, in materials made from metal. This study aims to determine the effect of compounds formed on the hardness and wear rate of commercially pure titanium material before and after the plasma nitriding process. In this study using variations of time 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours and temperature variations of 350 oC and 450 oC with a fixed nitrogen pressureof1.6mbar. From the test results obtained the value of the initial hardness (raw material) 105.75 VHN, with the optimum plasma nitriding process for 4 hours with a temperature of 450oC and press 1.6 bar up to 226.64 VHN increased 114%. In the wear tests which were initially 4,0148 × 10-8mm2/kg it decreased to 7.87 × 10−9 mm2 / kg. These changes occur because of the formation of new compounds on the surface of commercially pure titanium.
