Abstract
The research aims to describe type of errors according surface strategy taxonomy are made by the students in using passive voice, to examine the source of errors done by the students. This research applied descriptive was done in SMA I Wonosari. The writer took second grade students (XI IPA1) as the subject of the study. In collecting the data, the writer uses a test as an instrument. The test consists 20 items. In analyzing data the writer use descriptive method that includes collecting data, identifying error from the student’s answer sheets, classifying the data concerning to the passive voice based on the surface strategy taxonomy, arranging the data into table, calculating the frequency and determining the sources of errors. The result of the study shows that the total errors made by the students is 223 out of the 800 student’s answers. The students errors are divided into four categories, omission: 61 (27,3%), addition: 14 (6,3%), misformatin: 98 (43,9%). Misordering: 50 (22,5%). The highest frequency of errors is misformation and the lowest frequency of errors is addition. The dominant sources of errors are interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer. This research show that the students still make errors in using passive voice and they need improvement to develop their skill especially in learning passive voice.
