Abstract
The purpose of this research is to describe faults and analyze the fault-causing factors of VIIC SMP N 2 Baki Sukoharjo in solving the mathematical subject matter set based on Newman method. This type of research is qualitative descriptive with a case study design that was implemented in SMP N 2 Baki Sukoharjo in the even semester of the 2019/2020 school year. The subject of this study is VIIC students of SMP N 2 Baki Sukoharjo. Data collection techniques Using test methods, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques use qualitative descriptive data analysis. The results stated that the student who did the reading errors as much as 52%, comprehension errors as much as 60%, transformation error as much as 64%, process skills errors (81%), encoding errors of 52% and the carelessness by 28%. Students ' mistakes are caused by not knowing the steps or procedures for solving the problem, being less thorough in working on the question, not accustomed to writing and not being able to repour the variables into the asked form. Another reason student’s make mistakes lack of practice in solving problems. Keywords: set, error, Newman.
