Abstract

ABSTRACT Research aims todescribe the development of character education through school culture and identify the factorors that influence the implementation of character education through school culture in SMP Muhammadiyah Darul Arqom Karanganyar This research is a qualitative study using field studies at SMP Muhammadiyah Darul Arqom Karanganyar. Data subjects from this study were students, teachers and also the principal. Data were collected using interview, observation and documentation techniques. Data analysis method include data reduction, data display and data verification. Based on the reseach concuted, the researchers concluded that the main character values developed at SMP Muhammadiyah Darul Arqom Karanganyar are religius values, discipline value, honesty and responsibility. The methods used in character education are examplery, habituation, story, discipline, reword and punishment. Whereas implementing character education through school culture is done through habituation activities, namely routine habituation, spontaneous habituation, exemplary habituation and conditioning habituation. Factor that influence the implementation of character educationthrough school culture are divided into 2 factors, namely supporting factors and inhibiting factors. Supporting factors include good communication ( communication between teachers, teachers with student guardians, teachers witd headmaster), school facilities and infrastructure that have been provide by the school and the pricipal’s leadership that teaches discipline and improvement in achievement. While the inhibiting factors include the negativeinfluence of technological advances, environmental conditions that are less supportive in inculcation of character and the lack of parental attention to children’s behavior .
