Abstract

The major problem of this research is how the anxiety of major character described in this novel. The objective of the study is to analyze the novel based on its structural element and to analyze the novel based on the psychoanalytic approach. In analyzing The Ambassadors, the writer uses psychoanalytic approach and qualitative method. The object of the study is personality of major character of Henry James’s The Ambassadors published in 1964. The data sources are literary data divided into two categories, primary data and secondary data. The primary data source is the novel of The Ambassadors itself and the secondary data source is other sources related to the data analysis. The method of data collection of the study is library research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. There are two results of the study, the first result comes from structural analysis. The structural elements in the novel include the character and characterization, plot, point of view, setting and the last theme. The analysis shows that each of the elements are interrelated to each other. Therefore it makes easer to the readers in understanding the story of the novel. The second result comes from psychological point of view, the study shows that the problem faced by major character brings her into anxiety. She cannot solve the problem, it makes her nothing to lose and finally she is submitting to the fate and she loses everything she ever had.
