Abstract
The carbonizing process (carburizing) is a thermochemical process carried out by heating the specimen at its austenitic temperature in a chamber containing carbon. This carbonization aims to increase the carbon content in the surface layer of steel so that the steel has a hard surface. In this research, the materials used for carburizing are low carbon steel, 200 mesh sifted coconut shell charcoal and nanoparticles which have been shelled. The tool used for making nanoparticles is a modification of the shaker mils with a motor speed of 900 Rpm, for 3 million cycles with the size of a steel ball pounder that is 5/32 inches in size. From this test the carbon steel is then mixed with nanoparticle coconut shell charcoal then put into the furnace for carburizing the material with a temperature of 900 ° C with a holding time of 2 hours. Microstructure testing aims to determine the collection of phases owned by carbon steel after the carburizing process. Hardness testing aims to determine the hardness of the material.
