Abstract

Abstraction ability is the ability to describe about mathematics situations or problems. This study aims: (1) to describe the ability of abstraction students at the recognition level in integral problem solving; (2) to describe the ability of abstraction students at the repersentation level in integral problem solving; and (3) to describe the ability of abstraction students at the structural abstraction level in integral problem solving. The method used in this study is qualitative description. The subject of this study are students of class XI IPS 1 SMA Negeri 2 Surakarta which amounts to 30 students. This study uses some instruments there are form of test abstraction ability and interview guideline. The result shows that (1) at recogition level, the average of students are able to recall and identify previous activities related to the problem at hand; (2) at representation level, the average of students are not able to express the results of previous thingking in the form of mathematical symbols, but they are able to transform the structure into mathematical models and to run alternative possible solution; and (3) at structural absraction level the average students are not able to reorganize the structure of mathematical problems in the form of compiling, organizing, and developing. Therefore, it can be concluded that abstraction ability of students of class XI IPS SMA Negeri 2 Surakarta needs to be improve.
