Abstract

This research aims to: 1) examine the differences in the ability to solve open-ended math questions in the pattern of the number of PISA negative numbers in Quantity content in terms of gender. 2) describe the difficulty of students completing PISA questions for students. This research uses mix method research because it uses two research methods namely quantitative and qualitative methods. The subjects of this study were class VIII B SMP Negeri 1 Gatak totaling 28 students consisting of 6 male students and 22 female students. Data collection techniques used were the method of tests, interviews, and documentation. In this study the validity of the data uses triangulation techniques by comparing data from test results, interviews, and documentation. Quantitative data analysis techniques using the T-test, while the reduction, presentation to conclusion drawn according to the steps of Polya. The results of this study concluded: 1) there was no difference in the ability to solve PISA-oriented mathematical questions in the content Quantity between male students and female students. 2) High-ability students can fulfill all indicators in solving problems properly, moderate and low-ability students are inconsistent in carrying out the stages of solving the problem so that it is not maximal Key words: student difficulties, problem solving , polya, mathematics, PISA
