Abstract

Future orientation is a strategy prepared by individuals to achieve the desired expectations in the future. This research aims to find out how the future orientation of children of migrant parents. The informants of this study were five children of parents who migrated and selected by purposive sampling with the criteria of the subject being children who were left migrating between parents, at least parents had migrated for ± 3 years and the informants in this study were 5 people. Data collection techniques are semi-structured interviews. The results of this study are all children stated that they are closer to the father than the mother. According to them, the father is more caring and loving than the mother who is more fussy. In terms of learning, the subject states that the presence of parents at home makes them more enthusiastic in learning. Whereas one subject stated that the presence or absence of parents at home did not affect the enthusiasm in learning, so the subject still never learned even during the school exam. In planning for the future, children have been able to determine what to do after graduating from school, including 3 children who want to go to higher schools and two children who want to work. The choice is inseparable from the involvement of parents in determining decisions on the subject. This involvement is dominant in girls, whereas in boys parents are more free for children to make their own choices. Children who wish to work after graduation have a reason to choose to work because they want to develop a shoe making business owned by parents so that it can become a big business. Another reason is that children assume that parents go abroad and only return home once a year because they have to work to support themselves. Therefore the subject wishes to work so that parents no longer need to go abroad and stay at home. The subject also stated that he wanted to be like friends who could gather with parents at home as well as parents who also picked up report cards at school because so far parents never picked up report cards. The effort made by the subject to be able to realize the desires that are owned by trying, studying and praying. The subject felt quite satisfied with the efforts made even though there were some obstacles that arose, including influenced by friends not to study, skipping school and playing games. Factors that influence future orientation are peers, economic status and relationships with parents. Children who have good communication with parents have a clearer orientation to continue on to college. Delinquency that appears in one of the children is ditching, smoking and drinking alcohol because he was given a friend when he was thirsty and spontaneously drink it.
