Abstract
S 45 C steel is of medium carbon steel. This steel has better mechanical properties than ST 40 steel. Because it has more peralite content. This steel is also suitable for heat treatment that can counteract the hardness of the steel. This research aims to determine the effect of the cooling media process heat treatment on changes in the micro structure and thermal conductivity of S 45 C. steel. The process of making steel specimens cut by 4 mm and 2 mm by 4 pieces was then heat treated at 850 ℃ for 40 minutes and cooled using water and air oil cooling media. After the heat treatment process the steel is then tested for thermal conductivity with a heating temperature of 150 ℃ and micro photographs The results of the study show that changes in the microstructure affect the thermal conductivity value of S 45 C steels. S 45 C steels which are heat treated and cooled using oil media have large granules and good conductivity, whereas steels that are cooled with air have small granules and low conductivity
