Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the concepts in solving mathematical problems. Understanding concepts is important in studying mathematics. By learning mathematics students are able to apply concepts, so students are able to think logically. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects consisted of three students of class VIII at SMP Negeri 1 Gatak Sukoharjo, namely students with high mathematical abilities (S1), students with moderate mathematical abilities (S2), and students with low mathematical abilities (S3). The data was collected through tests, video recordings, field notes, and interviews, data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data was obtained through validation and triangulation. The results showed that students with high mathematical abilitities can to solved all indicators of understanding concepts compared to subjects with moderate and low mathematical abilities. Students with high mathematical ability can solve mathematical problems that are given correctly in accordance with the indicators given. Students with avarage mathematical abilities can to solved the given problem but not all indicators on understanding conceps can fulfilled by them. Students with low mathematical abilities were not able to solved problems precisely according to indicators.
