Abstract
ST40 steel is steel containing 0.14% carbon, this shows that ST40 steel includes low carbon steel. This steel is also suitable for the heat treatment process which can increase the hardness of the steel. This study aims to determine the effect of heat treatment cooling media heat treatment process on changes in microstructure and thermal conductivity of ST40 steel. The process of making steel specimens cut by 4mm thick and 2mm by 4 pieces was then treated with a temperature of 850 ° C for 40 minutes and cooled using water and oil cooling media. After the heat treatment process the steel is then tested for icrostructure and thermal conductivity test. The results of the study show that changes in the icrostructure affect the thermal conductivity value of the ST40 steel. ST40 steels which are not heat treated have large granules and have good conductivity values, while steels that are cooled with oil have small granules and low conductivity
