Abstract

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid state welding method which welding joints are formed without the addition of filler metal. This study was conducted to determine the effect of cross section pin tool shape on FSW aluminum plate welding. The welding process uses a variation of the cross section shape of the pin tool cylinder, triangle, and square with a tool rotational speed of 900 rpm and a feed rate of 30 mm / minute. The material used in this study was 2 aluminum plates AL 1100 - Al 5083 with a length of 150 mm, width 70 mm and thickness of 3 mm. Furthermore, the results of welded joints were carried out tensile testing, vickers hardness testing, and microstructure photos. The results of this study indicate that the difference in pin tool affects the mechanical properties of friction stir welding. The results of the tensile strength in the square pin tool shape have the highest tensile strength of 119.22 MPa, while the lowest in the triangle tool pin shape is 63.85 MPa. The largest strain value occurs in the form of a tapered cylinder pin tool of 10.45% and the lowest in the form of a triangular pin tool of 6.25%. Whereas the highest hardness value is in the form of a triangular pin tool at the welding center of 106.7 VHN while the low hardness in the center of the weld is in the form of a square pin tool of 30.8 VHN. The photo results of the cross section micro triangle tool were microstructure produces a micro structure that is finer than the tapered or square cylinder pin tool.
