Abstract

Paper is one of the vital tools that people use to store information, education and communication. The increasing demand for paper has an obstacle in fulfilling paper raw materials and has an adverse impact on the environment because until now the main raw material for pulp that is widely used is wood, so that there is a need for wood substitutes in pulping such as corn husks. Corn husk is a large amount of agricultural waste which has a high cellulose content, so that it can be used as a raw material for pulping. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the effect of cooking time and sodium hydroxide concentration on the decrease levels of lignin from corn husk pulp by the kraft process. The variables used were independent variables with NaOH concentration (0%, 1%, 3% and 5%) and cooking time (30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes), the dependent variable in the form of lignin content and control variables is corn husk and power microwave. So the highest lignin level produced was 2.8327% of 30 minute with a concentration Na2S 4% and NaOH 0%, while the lowest lignin content obtained was 1.3045% at an optimum time of 120 minutes with a concentration Na2S 4% and 5% NaOH.
