Abstract

Tofu industry owned by Mr. Parto in Semarang was one industry that has switched to using a steam boiler as a heater meida in the process of tofu making. Despite its use in tofu industry, steam boiler has potential risk of high explosion and othe problems if ist users do not maintain it well. Placing a boiler near a fryer or near fuelstorage can add more to the danger. The long line of production floor may decrease production effectiveness. This research was aimed at identifying the potential of danger and Occupational Safety and Health of boiler and analyzing the layout of the facility in order to minimalize the potential of danger and to shorten the length of floor production in order to improve work productivity.Methods used were field and literature study on Occupational Safety and Health while for the design of facility layout, the method used was Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, Shitsuke (5S). 5S method was used in order to improve the organization of the work station so that it will not disturb the workers activities. Based on the result of this research, industries particularly small industries like tofu industry need to pay special attention to their boilers. According to the result of this research, it is suggested that the proper layout for this industry has 11.5 m long of line production.
