Abstract
Environmental pollution can come from solid, liquid and gas wastes. One of the liquid pollutions originates waste from the laundry business. There are various kinds of parameters that have impacts to the environment, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS), phosphate, and others. One method that can be used to reduce the parameters in laundry liquid waste is the coagulation-flocculation. This method is regarded as easy, simple, effective and affordable. The type of coagulant used is aluminum sulfate or commonly called alum. It can be either solid or liquid and easily obtained. This research’s aimed to reduce the levels of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and phosphate in laundry waste by using alum to meet wastewater quality standards. Alum coagulant doses variation were 0.25; 0.5; 0.75; 1; 1.25 gr / L and stirring time which were 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 minutes. To determine the decrease in the level of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), a closed reflux test was carried out with spectrophotometry, as well as testing for a decrease in phosphate levels by spectrophotometry.
