Abstract

Carburizing is the process of adding carbon content to the steel surface to get a harder steel properties on its surface by heating metals in environments that contain a lot of activated carbon. Carbon will diffuse into the metal with austenizing temperature which is around 760°C-1300°C. The purpose of this study was to determine changes in the properties of steel both physical and mechanical properties. The material used is low carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.3%. The carbonation process begins with mixing 7 grams of sonokeling wood and 1 gram of BaCO, then put it into the pottery with the steel position in the middle. Followed by heating in the oven at 900⁰C with a holding time of 2 hours then released and left in the open air for ± 1 day, then tested the hardness with micro vikers method using a Micro Hardness Tester tool and microstructure observation with an Inverted Metallurgical Microscope. From the results of the initial testing process on raw materials including the low steel group with the element Carbon (C) 0.162%. The results of microstructure in raw material are predominantly ferrite crystals, in carbonation results with charcoal measuring 200 mesh there is fine pearlite at the edges while carbonation with charcoal from the sheker mill results in a more dominant pearlite crystal. The results of the raw material hardness value of 168 VHN on carbonation with charcoal measuring 200 mesh by 192 VHN and on carbonation with charcoal the sheker mill yield was 210 VHN.
