Abstract
Hyperglycemia is a clinical manifestation of the occurrence of diabetes type 2 due to insulin resistance. Hyperglycemia can cause oxidation of LDL by free radical so that can increase LDL levels. Giving antioxidants are known to suppress the oxidation of the LDL. One of the lipophilic antioxidant that can prevent the oxidation of LDL is β-carotene. This study aimed to determine the effect of β-carotene supplementation dose of 10 mg / kg for 30 days with a frequency of once every 2 days blood cholesterol levels Wistar male rats Streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus and Nicotinamide. Research methodology used a total of 18 male Wistar rats were randomized design with pre and post test randomized controlled group design form the three groups of X1 (non-diabetic); X2 (STZ-induced rat 45 mg / kg and NA 110 mg / kg); X3 (diabetic rats treated β-carotene 10 mg / kg). β-carotene is given by way of a sonde with a frequency of once every 2 days for 30 days. Blood glucose levels are checked using GOD-PAP method and LDL precipitation reagent diperiksan method for in-vitro determination of LDL Cholesterol with CHOD-PAP on photometric system. Analysis of data using statistical test paired t-test and one way ANOVA. The result showed there were significant differences in decreased levels of LDL in male rats Wistar (p = 0.000) post-treatment of β-carotene supplementation of 10 mg / kg in a sonde for 30 days with a frequency of once every two days.
