Abstract
High energy consumption decreases the supply of fossil fuels as an energy source. Therefore, alternative energy needs to be developed according to the Presidential Regulation No. 5 of 2006. Bioethanol is a fuel source that can be a solution to the energy crisis problem. One of the wastes that can be used to be converted into bioethanol is cocoa pods. The main component found in cocoa skin is lignocellulose which consists of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. The most important main step in processing the lignocellulose material is pretreatment. This step is needed to degrade lignin by using a base solution of 1% NaOH for 3 hours. The next step is acid hydrolysis. At this stage the polysaccharide breakdown occurs in lignocellulose, converting the cellulose into glucose. Acid hydrolysis was carried out using H2SO4 for 4 hours with a concentration of 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75%. The best glucose content was then varied by hydrolysis time for 4 hours, 5 hours, and 6 hours with the best results at 4 hours at 0.973 g / 10 g sample. The fermentation of hydrolysis product was carried out using the bacterium Saccharomyces cereviseae, derived from fermipan (bread yeast) to convert the sugar compounds into ethanol. This study obtained of the ethanol level of 1.07%.
