Abstract

Height is an important indicator to determine nutritional status. Measurement of standing height in the elderly is difficult because of changes in the musculoskeletal system so the measurement is made using estimating. Measurement of arm span is a method to estimate heigt. Height estimates can be calculated using formulas that have been developed in several studies such as formulas of Fatmah, Shaar and Pooy, Goon. This study aimed to determine the formula for estimating based on arm span for outpatients at Klaten Selatan Health Center. This study was an observational study using a cross sectional approach. Research respondents consisted of adults aged 25-45 years as many as 43 respondents and elderly people aged 60-69 as many as 43 respondents were recruited using accidental sampling. Data on height and arm span were obtained from direct anthropometric measurements using tape measure and microtoice. Data were analyzed using One Way Annova test. Average estimated height in adult group using Fatmah’s formula was 150,79 cm; Shaar and Pooy’s formula was 151,57 cm; Goon’s formula was 157,33 cm. The elderly group has an average estimated height using Fatmah’s formula was 151,38 cm; Shaar dan Pooy’s formula was 151,90 cm; Goon’s formula was 157,18 cm. There is a difference between actual height and estimated height using the equations of Fatmah, Shaar and Pooy and Goon in the adult group with a p value = 0.001 and the elderly group with a p value = 0.035. Goon’s formula is significantly different from the actual height, while the Shaar and Pooy’s formula and Fatmah’s formula are not significantly different from the actual height.
