Abstract

The purpose of this research to describe the benefits and obstacles of using social networks (Whatsapp, Facebook, and Instagram) as online business media in this millennial era. This type of research is a qualitative research with ethnographic design. The subjects of this research were accounting education students from 2015 to 2018 Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta who used social networks to do online business with 15 students. Data collection methods are through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of this research known that the benefits of social networking are not only felt by sellers but also can make it easier for customers to reach the product being sold. Social networks are used as a means of transmission in online businesses that connects sellers with consumers. The perceived obstacles are the amount of competition between online businesses and a lot of online shops which causes the lack of customers, complaints from consumers about products sold, the difficulty of finding a reliable supplier with quality products but with lower price, the products are not suitable with the orders, and there is no guarantee for the purchase of a product.
