Abstract
Oil fuel is the most dominant energy. This causes a decline in the supply of petroleum resources. Therefore, it is necessary to develop renewable energy, one of which is bioethanol that can be made from lignocellulose conversion in dry cocoa pod. The first step was pre-treatment process to remove the levels of lignin by cooking using NaOH for 3 hours. Then the hydrolysis process was carried out using hydrochloric acid (HCl) to convert lignocellulose monomers to simple sugars with variations in concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75% for 4, 5, and 6 hours. The highest glucose yield is obtained at 0.25% acid concentration for 6 hours, which is equal to 0.958 g/10 g samples. The hydrolisate was then cleaned through detoxification process with the addition of Ca(OH)2 and alum to remove the inhibitors formed during the hydrolysis process. After that, fermentation was carried out to convert the sugar into ethanol using Saccharomycess cereviciae bacteria from fermipan. Fermentation was carried out at room temperature and pH between 4.5-5 for 72 hours. The next process was distillation for 6 hours at a temperature of 78-80oC, obtained by distillation volume of 4 mL and yielding ethanol content of 1.87%.
