Abstract

Dangerous parameters contained in laundry wastewater are Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Phosphate. The higher levels of COD and phosphate in water, that the higer the toxic. The results of measurements on synthetic detergent waste water obtained that COD and Phosphate were 766.89 mg/L and 3.29 mg/L respectively. This value exceeds the specified quality standard. This study aims to determine the effect of Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) concentration and stirring time on decreasing levels of COD and Phosphate and compare the optimum in synthetic detergent and laundry wastewater using Jar-Test method or coagulation-flocculation method with rapid stirring of 100 rpm for 1 minute and gentle stirring flocculation 40 rpm with variations of time 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 minutes. Determination of optimum mass is done by adding PAC coagulant of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 and 1.25 grams respectively in 1 liter of synthetic detergent waste water and then to measure COD levels using the closed reflux method and phosphate using the APHA-2001 method. From the variation of coagulant mass and time of stirring it can be seen that the maximum percentage of the highest COD reduction was 92.18% at 1.25 g coagulant PAC and phosphate at 99.23% at 0.75 g mass and the optimum time for COD and Phosphate reduction is 15 minutes in syntethic detergent waste water. While the laundry waste water using mass and the same time as detergent waste synthesis can only reduce COD and Phosphate levels to 77.19% and 78.13% respectively.
