Abstract

Biodiesel is one of the alternative materials used to replace fossil fuels,where the raw materials usually come from vegetable and animal oils. One of the raw materials used in biodiesel production is used cooking oil. The production of biodiesel can be done with a transesterification reaction, the reaction between triglycerides and alcohol with the aid of catalyst of fly ash to forms fatty acid methyl esters and glycerol as a by-product. This research was conducted to determine the effect of time and temperature of the transesterification reaction of used cooking oil on the biodiesel yield.The transesterification reaction is carried out by reacting used cooking oil and a methanol with a ratio of 1: 9 and fly ash catalyst weighing 5% from 15 grams of used cooking oil with stirring speed of 600 rpm. The study used independent variables with variations of time 1, 2, 3 hours and variations in temperature of 30, 45, 60oC. The results showed that temperature and time variations had an effect on the quantity of biodiesel produced. The best condition to obtain the highest yield was at 2 hours with a temperature of 60oC, giving yield of 18,7%. Keywords: Biodiesel, used cooking oil, transesterification, fly ash, yield
