Abstract
Lightning is a natural phenomenon of the release of positive and negative charges from the cloud due to the potential difference between the cloud and the earth surface in achieving equilibrium. Lightning can provide advantages and disadvantages for life. Lightning strikes form nitrogen oxides carried by rain which are useful for plants, and produce ozone to protect the earth from ultraviolet rays. Meanwhile, the phenomenon of lightning that can not be predicted the location and time of occurrence can be a threat to objects on the surface of the earth, including humans. The region of Kulonprogo Regency which borders the Indian Ocean and the Menoreh Mountains has the potential to cause higher lightning activity. The lightning strike density analysis in Kulonprogo Regency aims to find areas that have high lightning density intensity, as well as height and land cover factors that affect it. The lightning density calculation is done using the Kriging method with units of area per km2 and classified into 3 density classes, namely low, medium, and high, based on the BMKG lightning classification. The study uses daily cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning data for 2012- 2016 obtained from BMKG Geophysics Station. From 60 months of research, over 35 months experienced moderate and high lightning density variations, while for 25 months experienced only low lightning density. Areas that have high lightning density intensity are Girimulyo District which has high lightning density for 26 months and moderate lightning density for 35 months, followed by Kalibawang, Pengasih, Samigaluh, Nanggulan, etc. Of the high lightning density in several areas in Kulonprogo, the most lightning activity occurs in the Menoreh Mountain at an altitude between 450 – 950 m and in dense settlements and paddy fields at an altitude between 100 – 450 m.
