Abstract
The study is aimed at finding two objectives, there are (1) the equivalence of the request strategies used in Divergent Novel by Veronica Roth and its translation. (2) the equivalence of the politeness strategies of the request utterance used in Divergent Novel by Veronica Roth and its translation. This study is qualitative research. The data are utterances which contain request strategies used by the characters. The data sources are the Divergent Novel written by Veronica Roth and its translation. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation method. The data are analyzed by using theory of Kulka, House and Kasper theory (1993)and the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). The results of the research revealed, first, there are eight request strategies used in Divergent Novel such as mood derivable (29%), explicit performative (8%), locution derivable (21%), want statement (4%), suggestory formula (4%), prepatory (13%), strong hint (17%), and mild hint (4%). Second, there are four types of politeness strategies employed by the characters such as bald on record (54%), negative politeness (17%), positive politeness (25%), and off record (4%). Mood derivable, locution derivable, and strong hint and bald on record become the dominant of the intention of request strategies and politeness strategies used in Divergent Novel.
