Abstract

Introduction : Height is one indicator of nutritional status and very important in determining nutritional status. Measuring height in the elderly is difficult because of some physical changes that affect height such as posture problems. In the elderly there is a decline in the value of the range of the arm span that is slower than the decrease in height so that it can be concluded that the range of the arm span tends not to change much with age. Objective : This study was conducted to determine the validity of height estimation based on the range of arms with actual height in the elderly in the working area of the Health Center Gambirsari Banjarsari sub district Surakarta. Methods: This study was an observational study using the Cross Sectional approach. The subjects used in this study were elderly people aged ≥60 years,can stood and measure height and arm span, the number of male subjects was 48 people and women were 48 people from 10 Pos Lansia in the working area of the Surakarta Gambirsari Health Center. Take the sample with Cluster Sampling. The data was analyzed by Pearson Product Moment test, Kruskal Wallis test and One Way ANOVA test. Result : The results of the Pearson Product Moment analysis indicate that there is a relationship between Arm-span with actual height which had value r = 0.886; p = 0.000 in the female elderly, and r = 0.801; p = 0.000 in the elderly male. In addition, from the One-Way ANOVA test, there was a difference between actual height and height estimation with Arm-span. Value in the formula Reeves, the value of p = 0.000 for the elderly woman and p = 0.000 for the elderly male. The formula Fatmah p = 0.954 in the female elderly and p = 0.028 in the elderly male. The formula Shahar and Pooy p = 0.032 in the female elderly and p = 0.009 in the elderly male. Conclusion : In this study formula Fatmah can be used to calculate height estimation based on arm span for elderly women subjects in the Surakarta region.
