Abstract

This study aims to describe the portrayal of male masculinity through the figure of Arthur Curry in James Wan's Aquaman film. This study revealed signs of masculinity through the main character Arthur Curry. This research includes descriptive qualitative research. The objects of this research are signs, objects, and meanings in scenes and dialogues in the film Aquaman 2018. The population in this study are all the characters in Aquaman's film. The sample studied was the main character of Aquaman's film Arthur Curry. Data collection techniques that are in accordance with this study both primary or secondary data are by documentation techniques. In the validity of the data, the researcher conducted data validity using the theory triangulation technique. To analyze the data used Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis to find out the meaning of the sign of masculinity visualized in Aquaman's film. The results of the study conclude the main characters in Aquaman's film, Arthur Curry has seven concepts of masculinity expressed by Janet Saltzman Chafetz, including 1) Physical appearance: strength, male, athletic, strong and brave. 2) Functional, responsible for relatives, and themselves. 3) Sexual: attraction with women. 4) Emotions: controlling or hiding emotions. 5) Intellectuals: intelligent, logical, rational and objective thinking. 6) Interpersonal: responsible, leader-minded and dominating. 7) Other Personal Character: competitive spirit and adventure.
