Abstract

The matrices of this study was to use epoxy and polypropylene treatment on the strength of rami fiber (BOEHMERIA NIVEA) with using volume fraction of 40%, 50% and 60%. After testing was to obtain the best volume fraction, the type of fault produced from the two matrices and the SEM test result was not treat with NaOH. The results of this study that the best volume fraction is 60% volume fraction of epoxy and polypropylene matrices with the epoxy matrix volume fraction of 60% absorbed average energy 16,558 J, average impact price of 0,138 J / mm and fraction polypropylene 60% get an average value of absorbed energy 13,541 J, theaverage impact price is 0,113 J / mm 2 . Then the fracture show that the macro photo of epoxy reinforced fiber has brittle fracture and there are few fibers that experience pull out or there are voids in the fracture area, but the results of the fracture produced from the polypropylene matrix are ductile because some fibers do not break well and the fracture section show clearly that fiber does not blend well with the matrix. The results of the Scaning Electron Microscope (SEM) test with epoxy specimens were not treated with alkaline NaOH show that the lignin layer was very thick and could not yet show hemicellulose which preached cellulose or parts of fine fibers, namely the fiber core.
