Abstract

This research deals with exclamatory expression in the Harry Potter’s novel. The aims of this research are to describe the equivalence of linguistic form and meaning, to describe the equivalence of intention and to describe the equivalence of politeness pattern of the exclamatory expression in the Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows into Harry Potter dan Relikui Kematian. The writer employs the descriptive qualitative as the type of the research. The data source of this research is Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows and Harry Potter dan Relikui Kematian novels. The technique of analyzing data of this research are comparing the data found, determining the equivalency in Form and Meaning referring to Linguistics Form, Intention by uses the Speech Act theory and Politeness Pattern by referring to FTA theory in Indonesian translation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and drawing the conclusion and suggestions based on the data analysis. From the data analysis the writer finds that, 94,52% data in both the source and target languages belonging to equivalent linguistic form. Secondly, there are 5,48% data belonging to non equivalent linguistic form, while the meaning is still equivalent. Third, there are 100% data in both the source and target languages belonging to equivalent intention. And fourth, there are 100% data in both the source and target languages belonging to equivalent politeness pattern. The writer infers that Listiana Srisanti as the translator of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows novel made a better translation. All meanings of exclamatory expression from the source language into target language are translated equivalently. The forms which are not equivalent in this translation process had a purpose to make the target language readers easy to understand the source language author’s ideas, thoughts, and messages.
