Abstract

This research is about the subtitling analysis of tag question in comedy films entitled: “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, “The Majestic”, “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer”, and, “Bruce Almighty”. The objectives of the study are to classify the forms of tag questions and their subtitling used in comedy films, and to describe the appropriateness of subtitling of tag questions in comedy films. This research applies descriptive qualitative method. By applying this method, the researcher uses the subtitling of comedy films that entitled “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, “The Majestic”, “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer”, and, “Bruce Almighty”, while the data of the research are tag questions. The method of collecting data is documentation. The technique of analysis used in this study is descriptive analysis. The results of the research show that, first, from the 42 data of tag questions, the researcher finds 16 data or 38.09% of positive-negative tag questions, 14 data or 33.33% of negative-positive tag questions, and 12 data or 28.37% of special case. From the 42 data the researcher also finds 41data or 97.6% belong to appropriate subtitling and 1 datum or 2.4% belong to inappropriate subtitling.
