Abstract

The study is about how defense mechanism is reflected in Daniel Defoe’s Roxana or the Fortunate Mistress. The objectives of the study are to analyze the major’s character personality based on the structural elements and the psychoanalytic perspective of Sigmund Freud. In analyzing Roxana or the Fortunate Mistress, the writer uses the psychoanalytic approach and qualitative method. The objective of the study is the personality of the major character derived from Daniel Defoe’s novel that is published in 1998 by London and Vermont: Everyman. The data sources are divided into two categories: Primary and Secondary data. The primary data are taken from the novel itself. The secondary data are taken from the other sources related with the primary data. The technique of the data collection is library research. The technique of the data analysis is descriptive analysis. The outcome of this study shows that the individuals have unique personality that consist id, ego, and superego. These elements persuade the individual’s defense mechanism to face the internal conflict. Roxana as the major character in Roxana or the fortunate mistress who is abandoned by her husband with five children must live in poverty. It forces Roxana to deal with her internal conflict. She must defense herself with various ways to survive. The internal conflict persuades the defense mechanism in Roxana’s personality from an ordinary house wife to be a mistress. She sacrifices her whole body and herself dignity to escape from the miserable condition though in the wrong way, being a mistress or we can say a whore to get a status and wealth. In the end of the story, in order to cover up her identity, Amy, her faithful servant kills her daughter. And of course, Roxana feels great calamities about it.
