Abstract

The water catchment area of Lempake Dam is located in Samarinda City and Kutai Kartanegara Regency, this region has high rainfall, sandy soil, varying slope, and changes in land use such as coal mining activities and agricultural cultivation. This is make it possible erosion occurs. The purpose of this study was to determine and map the distribution of erosion rates in the catchment area of the Lempake Dam based on USLE method with the GIS approach, and to analyze the dominant factors on the rate of erosion that occurred using statistical analysis. USLE method uses five parameters, namely rainfall erosivity (R) obtained from annual rainfall maps, soil erodibility (K) obtained from maps of soil type, length and slope (LS) obtained from slope maps, crop management (C) and land conservation (P) obtained from the results of image interpretation and surveys field. Based on the calculation of the distribution of erosion rates in 5 classes which included very light (0 - 14.60 tons/ha/year), light (15.03 - 59.89 tons/ha/year), medium (65.69 – 175.45 tons/ha/year), weight (183.94 - 467.88 tons/ha/year) and very heavy (509.14 - 2,007.29 tons/ha/year) where all the erosion that occurs spread in all sub-districts research area. Based on the results of statistical analysis, the dominant factor for erosion rate that occurs in the catchment area of the Lempake Dam is the management of plants with a regression coefficient of 1188.683 and a sig. value 0.000 which has a positive effect so that it is indicated that the management of plants has a very strong influence on erosion that occurs compared to other variables.
