Abstract

The background of this study is the widespread use of social media as medium for preaching like YukNgaji community in Solo which used Instagram account @yukngajisolo to do so. This study employed the Use and Gratifications Theory focusing on the obtained discrepancy between the Gratification Sought (GS) and the Gratification Obtained (GO) on the followers of @yukngajisolo. The researcher used 99 samples that had been previously calculated using Slovin’s Formula from 11,996 populations. Pearson’s Product Moment was used to test validity of data while Cronbach’s Alpha was used to test the reliability of the data. This is a quantitative research of the cross tabulation analysis. The results of this study showed that the @yukngajisolo could not satisfy the need of their followers. It was proven by the mean score of the GS was greater than the GO. Based on the analysis, this was caused by several factors such as the posts of @yukngajisolo only focused on community activities, there was minimum interaction among the followers, and there was no guidance for followers through Instagram. As a result, the variety of expected motives by respondents cannot be fulfilled.
