Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of differences in metal molds and red sand molds on the value of hardness, microstructure, chemical composition, porosity that occurs in the objects. This research uses used or scrubbed aluminum material and used tin or rosok which are melted back using crucible furnace, before pouring liquid aluminum into the mold the first is to prepare metal molds and red sand molds, after doing further liquid aluminum with dimensions of 5cmx5cm poured into the mold with the addition of lead, it is 20% thick when aluminum has hardened and cooled the mold is being unloaded for the results of the cast object. The smelting specimens using red sand mold were then tested for composition and obtained (Al) 83.29%, (Si) 8.316%, (Cu), 2.064%, (Zn) 3.166% (Pb) 1.628%, and the results of chemical composition with metal molds were obtained (Al) 85.05%, (Si) 4.778%, (Cu), 1.743%, (Zn) 4.359% (Pb) 2.722%, then carried out Brinell hardness test with sand mold showed a value of 82.256 BHN, and metal molds of 83.889 BHN Then observed porosity defects of the two specimens and obtained the most porosity occurred in specimens with red sand mold, and metal molds have less porosity. From the results above it can be concluded that the mold affects the amount of porosity and hardness of the results of the castings.
